A Word to the wise

Topic: All of God's Word is lovely, especially the New Testament, but is there a particular verse or passage that has become extra-special to you?

Perhaps the one you recall most often, or the one God used to draw you. Maybe a word from Him in a crisis that put you over, or a Word of prophesy He is fulfilling. Share your favourite verses, and what they mean to you.

There's one chapter I have never been able to bring myself to preach on specifically, or write about. Simply because it is too beautiful for words.

No words of mine could ever do it justice, and trying would simply sully it.

When I hear others attempt to preach on it, I cringe, and have to leave, because they rarely come close.

So I keep it in my heart, just between me and Jesus.

It is of course the sublime climax of the Gospel in Romans Chapter 8.

I've got more, but let's have yours first...

This verse really stands out to me because I am only 23 years-old. It is from the NLT version:

Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you teach, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 NLT

Peter
You will keep in perfect peace, him whose mind is steadfast because he trusts in you. Is. 26:3 NIV

The verse that has real meaning for me is: Jesus looked at them and said, 'With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.' Mtt. 19:26 NIV

I truly believe this, and it always comes to mind when I need to be reminded. Jesus is truly love, and great to me. He is my life.

The verses that reflect me and my heart are 1 Timothy 1:12-17:

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Here is a trustworthy saying that demands full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

I know who I was before I accepted Jesus' Precious Gift of His saving grace, and these verses help keep me humble, and in awe of who God is.

After that, the whole Bible, from Genesis through to Revelation always penetrates my heart. Thank you Jesus!

I get revelation after revelation upon reading the first three chapters of Genesis.

This verse has become my shield when I am in the midst of anything, because it lets me know that He is truly with me at all times. It comforts me to know that His and of protection is there, and I can never truly grasp it no matter how I try.

"You have hedged me behind and before,And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it." Psalm 139:5-6

Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Heb. 11:1

I memorised this verse as a child in Sunday School, now that I have aged, I recall this verse, and it means so much more to me.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life." Jn. 3:16

What a most gracious thing the Creator of Earth did for us. Sacrificed his Son so that we could be free from our sins, as long as we believe in the LORD Jesus Christ, with all our hearts and souls.

Veronica
Col. 1:15-23

Jeremiah 9:24 - "But let him who glories, glory in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, exercising loveingkindness, judgement, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight, says the LORD. What an honour to be invited to know and understand the creator of the heavens and the earth: for in these things I delight, says the LORD."

All else is secondary to knowing our Saviour and Lord Jesus.

Romans 8:28 is my life verse.

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

When I learned this verse, about three years ago, I knew it was from God to me. Praise Him!

I was sexually abused by two different men over a period of a year when I was only nine. When I was an adult, I was a battered wife for eight years. God protected me from even more evil, and He also took me out of those places. He showed me His love and mercy, and taught me that I am not a 'victim of childhood sexual abuse', or a 'survivor of domestic violence', but that I am a daughter of the King of Kings. He alone is worthy of all honour, praise, and power. Amen

Blessed one
My verse is powerful. My sister has been married for ten years to a man who is currently unemployed. They just bought a new house in a new state, and their youngest daughter, just a toddler of four years, has Leukaemia, having relapsed this past February. I sent this verse to my newly born again sister. I know it helps her through all her times.

Jeremiah 29:11 (New Living Translation):
For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Martha Munizzi paraphrases it like this: "I know the plans I have for you, I'll give you hope for tomorrow, joy for your sorrow, strength for everything you go through."

Now have your say

One of the most frequent questions I'm asked is which is the best Bible translation? The answer suprises people when I tell them it is Not a book at all.
