The Power of God's Word

Written Word or Spoken Word

Q: Is preaching the Word more powerful than reading the Word?

A: Fascinating question! I take it you mean, is it better to proclaim the Gospel, than to give somebody a Bible or Gospel tract to read for themselves.

The Lord uses both means to save sinners. I was saved through reading John's Gospel. I wouldn't even listen to a preacher, Christians used to make me angry, I pitied and mocked them. Now look, Alleluia to Jesus! Oh He's beautiful.

So do distribute tracts, Gospels, and Bibles, and never give up on those arrogant, know-it-all sinners.

But there's also no doubt in my mind that the spoken, proclaimed Word is more powerful than a person reading the Word to themselves, provided the preacher is Spirit-filled.

Sinner's simply cannot endure the Word preached in power without coming under deep conviction.

The reason is; the Gospel was given to be proclaimed by our lips, that is the best way. It is God's way. God said, and there was. He's given us the joy of proclaiming His message, and He confirms it.

Sinners either flee or get saved. Power doesn't mean shouting, it means God's anointing, endorsing, and supernaturally confirming His Word.

Like Spurgeon said, The books were good, but the man was better. The revealed Word awakened me; but it was the preached Word that saved me.

Read Spurgeon's salvation testimony and notice that the man preaching to Spurgeon was barely literate, straining to find the words to make his point, but He knew the Living Christ. And Jesus used him to bring England's great Baptist preacher to salvation.

The Gospel spoken in Almighty power, who can stand against you and the Living God?

Instructions to new believers

Q: I've just been born again what do I do next?

New believers

Kenyon Bible Course
Perfect for new believers

These Kenyon books are a marvellous grounding for new believers

A: Ask your new Lord to lead you to a Spirit-filled fellowship, and tell the Pastors, so that they can arrange your water baptism.

Get filled with the Holy Spirit.

Obtain a Holy Bible, KJV or NIV, and read nothing but John's Gospel, and John's First letter, for the next six months.

I say this so you don't get distracted from the big picture.

Understand what Christ has done for you, and embrace these Gospel basics deep in your heart.

Straight away, tell everyone what Christ has done for you, and learn to listen to, and follow, the Holy Spirit in your heart. Oh, and rejoice because your sins are gone, you are a new creation in Christ.

Harmful computer games

Q: How do I stop my children playing video games?

A: Sit them down and draw a line, explain to them why they are not allowed to play them, then find them something more creative to do.

You're clearly aware that there's a demonic compulsion behind even the most innocent of computer games. Take your stand as a godly parent, and when they bleat, tell them, "Others can, you cannot!"

Do you know how to power a toy boat with mothballs? I've got a terrific book in my attic called A Hundred things a boy can make. It was written in 1953, and kept me busy and stimulated in my childhood.

There were also a series of small booklets called I-Spy that trained children to be observers and investigators of their surroundings. I enjoyed the nature study ones most. Get your kids something like that.

The Last Days

Q: What will the end of the world be like?

A: Look out of your window, and read your newspaper, and compare it with Jesus warnings in Luke 21 and Mtt. 24. Signs in the skies (climate change), earthquakes, famines, pestilence, wars, and rumours of wars, are all happening today with increasing frequency.

Sinners will be about their usual business, whilst the saints will be leading souls to Christ, and alert for the home-call. Isn't it an honour to be part of the last generation?

Sexual sin in marriage

Q: Is it a sin for a married couple to engage in certain kinds of sex?

A: The fact that your asking shows the Lord is convicting you, that should be enough to get you to stop sinning, and keep the marriage bed pure. Heb. 13:4.

Read these Scriptural exhortations in light of what you do in bed:

Eph. 4:17-19; notice, loss of sensitivity to the Holy Spirit results in sensuality and lust for impurity. Eph. 5:3-5 teaches us that God calls sexual immorality, and impurity, idolatry.

Do a simple self-check; does it come from the Holy Spirit, honour God, and glorify Christ; does it please Him, and fit in with His plan for your life and marriage?

Or does it arise from the flesh, and evil lustful desires, does it satisfy some demonic compulsion, impulse, or craving?

Be honest with yourself, and you'll have your answer. If there's still doubt, don't do it.

Life on Mars?

Q: Does the Bible tell us if there's life on any other planet?

A: The search for life on Mars, and elsewhere in our universe, is a classic red-herring. A waste of time and resources. An End-time distraction from the dire state of life on Earth and the End of the world.

If any traces of life are ever found outside of this planet, they came from the Earth. For example organic matter being exploded into space by meteorite impacts, volcanic eruptions, or the organic detritus left by astronauts. Yes, they just toss it outside, tons of it.

The Bible tells us that God created mankind in His image, in order to have a living relationship with us on His level.

It was a unique creation, He has done it just once, only on Earth, nowhere else.

Ignore whacky New Age ideas about extra-terrestrial life-forms, such fantasies come from demons.

Boldly go into all the world

We are alone in the universe. Don't waste precious time like 'Trekies' fantasising about life in other galaxies, there isn't any. If there was, God would have told us.

Instead, be busy honouring His only begotten Son's final command. There's still plenty of scope for Christian pioneers to 'boldly go' on this planet.

Everywhere I look I see the handiwork of Christ, and there's plenty of proof of the Biblical Flood too.
