Q: When a sinner comes to the altar to be saved, should we just pray over them in tongues, or open the Bible and show them what God's Word says to do to be saved? Shayne
A: Terrific question Shayne. That's a man about Father's business!
First; destroy the altar, Christians don't make altars. The only altar we acknowledge is in Heaven. Heb. 13:10. Altars in the OT were symbolic of what was to come at Calvary. Christ has done away with altars on Earth. Religious people still make altars, and they become idols and snares. We don't need religion, we have Christ. Here's more about Altar Calls.
If you meant simply coming forward to receive Christ, in response to an appeal, that is fine.
By all means pray in tongues, but quietly otherwise the sinner will think you're potty. 1 Co. 14:23. You should also ask the Lord softly in your mother-tongue what He wants you to do, and listen: It may well be nothing.
I recall when I came to Christ under conviction, and was so relieved when the folks leading me to Him (they had prayed together for about 30 minutes beforehand) led me to Christ in simple steps and plain English. They got it spot-on!
I was in the Glory, it was no use pulling a Bible out, my eyes were tight shut, but they asked the three essential questions, I gave the right answers, and He immediately poured Himself into me. Do you remember when He came in Saints? Praise Him!
You can certainly use a fixed routine like the Roman road verses. Although that can be a bit mechanical and dry.
I also know an effective missionary who takes sinners through the Gospel, then insists they go to Christ in prayer alone to get saved.
Take each sinner individually, and learn to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. I certainly needed help, but the Saviour is pretty good at saving people all on His own. He loves using us too sometimes.
I find you have to be far more assertive to get people healed though. Wigglesworth is an excellent example of that.
Q: Do you have specific examples of where the Catholic Mass goes against Scripture, and how it is an idol? Lisa
A: Plenty! Enjoy John Knox's landmark Scriptural exposure of why the Catholic Mass is Idolatry.
Q: What were the requirements for becoming a priest, a rabbi, or high priest? Michael
A: First, understand that all the Jewish ceremonies and priesthood have been done away with now. Christ made all that stuff obsolete when He initiated the New Covenant in His Blood. Read Hebrews, where the difference between the priesthoods and Covenants is made plain.
Before He returns, some religious Jews will rebuild the Temple (the Third Temple in Jerusalem, 2 Th. 2:4, Dan. 9:27, 11:31, 12:11) and blasphemously re-start the Old Covenant sacrifices and rituals.
The Jewish priesthood was only a shadow of the reality we have now in Christ. He is our eternal High Priest, and every born again believer is a priest of God. 1 Pe. 2:5,9, Rev. 5:10.
To be a priest under the Law you had to be a Jew of the right family; Aaron originally, and then assisted by the sons of Levi. They also had to be chosen, anointed by God, and without deformity. Cripples, scars, and broken noses were out!
Aren't you glad Christ did away with all that, (Col. 2:13-17), and has thrown open the door to God's Throne room? (Heb. 10:19-23) Now, even the vilest sinner can become a righteous, spotless, priest of Almighty God, the instant they repent and receive Christ as LORD. Think long about that, and worship Him, you priests!
Q: What does Halleluia mean?
A: The same as Alleluia.
