Mary Baker Eddy

Q: My husband recently accepted Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. His family follow Christian Science, and have come against us. We would like history on Mary Baker Eddy, and scriptures to better support our beliefs in Almighty God. Jane

A: That's wonderful news Jane!

The "Christian Science", (and similar Christadelphian) cult grew out of the nineteenth century fascination with metaphysical philosophy. Such pseudo-sciences are fertile ground for demonic diversion, and adherents often become potty and suicidal.

The teachings of Mary Baker Eddy are so unscriptural and contradictory to Christian belief, it's amazing that anybody ever listened to her. Her ideas are neither Christian, nor scientific. She claimed the Bible was her authority, yet flatly contradicted God's Word, and the tenets of Christian faith in her 1875 book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

For detailed information, The Moody Bible Institute have published several accounts of the minor cults.

Here's a sample of the weird doctrines of Christian Science:

  • Christian Science teaches that;
Evil, sin, disease, and death, are unreal, mere illusions.
  • They deny the Trinity, claim God does not have a body, and that "resurrection is spiritualization of thought".
  • They believe that "Divine Science" takes the place of the Holy Ghost, who they say does not exist.
  • God is "All in all", and nothing is matter.
  • They deny that Jesus is God in the Flesh.
  • They claim Jesus is just a man, and Christ the "divine idea".
  • They deny the existence of the Devil.
  • They deny the sacrifice of Jesus Christ can cleanse from sin.
  • Christian Science teaches that man does not have a sinful nature.
  • They do not practice water baptism or the Lord's Supper.
  • They deny the existence of a literal Hell.

You can tell it started in Boston, can't you?

Compare that with basic Bible statements, and even a Sunday school pupil could put them right.

The best way to help your husband is to focus on Christ, the Truth, the Living Word of God, not on the errors of cults.

You'll grow stronger as you follow Him, rather than by rooting out the weeds and tares of the cults in your midst. Avoid being distracted.

Get into a good Spirit-filled fellowship, and as you both mature in the Lord, you'll reflect His love to your relatives (instead of arguing doctrine with them), and they will see Christ in you.

The Truth in Love works wonders.

Bind the demons deceiving them, and ask the Lord to open their eyes to the Glory of the Gospel. You'll need grace, patience, faith, and deep love.

They may not get saved, because those duped by Christian Science have no real interest in Truth. However, there is a notable exception to inspire you.

England's leading proponent of this demonic cult, lay dying. In desperation she called for Smith Wigglesworth to help. Smith, knowing of her stubborn wickedness, chose not argue, he simply prayed and healed her in Jesus' Name, then led her to Christ. One touch from Jesus made all the difference, as every saved person knows from experience. Instead of dying, she preached the Lord Jesus Christ wherever she had previously proclaimed the errors of Christian Science.

Bible bashers

Q: Why are Born Again Christians so fanatical?

A: Because they've got The Fanatic inside them, and they are inside Him. (Col. 1:27, 1 Co. 1:30, 1 Co. 3:16, Rev. 3:20)

Our Glorious Leader lives, eats, and breathes His Father's will. It is all He thought about, all He spoke about, and all He did on Earth. (Jn. 4:34, 6:38, 14:9-10)

He was completely devoted to His Father, and His Father's business. (Jn. 5:19)

The Fanatic hasn't changed. (Heb. 13:8)

His disciples are the same. (Jn. 14:12)

They can't help it, it just comes supernaturally. (Jn. 7:37-39)

When you've got this good stuff inside, you can't remain quiet, or keep it to yourself. (Mtt. 5:14-16, 10:27)

But don't worry, you won't have to put up with us for much longer. (1 Th. 4:16-17)

You can't beat us, or stop us; so you'd be wise to join "The Jesus Fanatics".

In China they call us "Jesus Shouters".

I take that as an honour and scriptural compliment. (Mtt. 10:27)

What about aromatherapy, homeopathy and ...
