Q: I committed adultery before I was saved; and my wife recently asked me if I ever cheated on her, I told her no, since I consider myself Born Again, and a new man. Did I lie, and should I tell her that I did? (I think this could hurt my marriage very badly, trust wise) or should I leave it on the ocean's floor and continue forward in Christ?
A: Definitely tell your wife the whole truth, and soon; until then your marriage is built on sand. If she is a Christian, she probably already knows in her heart, and perhaps feels your answer was indeed a lie. The Spirit of God reveals much to Christians through their hearts, often long before their heads catch on.
If you were in her shoes, and knew the basis for your reply, would you accept that you'd answered her truthfully?
Of course not!
What if you asked your wife the same question, and she answered as you did?
See what I mean?
It is the Lord convicting you, and prompting you to enquire about it. Prove you are a new man by owning up to her without reservation, and ask her forgiveness for both sins.
The truth in love is always best, even when it hurts.
It is fear that causes people to deceive those they love. There is no fear in love. 1 Jn. 4:18.
Who do you trust the most; those who let you down and then try to cover up by deception, or those who fail, tell you, repent, and beg your forgiveness?
Go to the Lord; ask Him to forgive you, and to prepare your wife. Humble yourself, take whatever comes as discipline, and grow in Christ through it. (Heb. Ch. 12)
Q: Who is the Word of God?
A: The LORD Jesus Christ. Jesus of Nazareth is Almighty God in the Flesh: The Living Word of God.
When the Lord opens the eyes of our hearts we see the Holy Bible declares it from every page. Here's one clear demonstration (there are many more):
Grab a Holy Bible, and look up each of these verses asking the Lord for revelation.
Jn. 1:1 tells us plainly, the Word is God. Rev. 19:11-16 shows us the Word of God is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Next go to Rev. 17:14 where the Holy Spirit confirms the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is also the Lamb of God. Finally, flip to Jn. 1:29 and 36, where you read that the Lamb of God is Jesus Christ.
So, when we read Jn. 1:14; the Word became Flesh and dwelt amongst us, the Holy Spirit is speaking of The LORD Jesus Christ: The Word of God. In whom is all the fulness of the Deity in bodily form. Col. 2:9.
It is one thing to understand this with your mind, another altogether to receive it by revelation from Father. Mtt. 16:17. Father, reveal The Truth to those who read this today.
Q: I am not sure why 1 Co. 14:22 says speaking in tongues is meant for unbelievers.
A: It isn't referring to all tongues; remember there's the Gift of speaking in tongues, which is used in various ways, and there's personal devotional tongues. Here the Holy Spirit is referring to a particular use of tongues as a sign to unbelievers. This is made clear by 1 Co. 14:21-22, exactly as happened in Acts 2:4-13. God gave the tongues as a sign to the unbelieving Jews. There are many similar modern examples.
Smith Wigglesworth recounts a case where a sceptical scholar of Hebrew and Greek visited his fellowship. The man "knew it all", and refused to accept the Pentecostal doctrine of the Baptism in the Spirit.
He exasperated the believers with his loquacious carping. During a worship meeting, two Bradford women believers were in the Spirit, and took turns speaking in tongues. The scholar was stunned speechless. He went from one to the other listening carefully to their tongues.
He later explained what happened. God used those two uneducated women to speak perfect biblical Hebrew and Greek, exhorting the Bible scholar to get right with God. He was the only person in the room who knew those languages. Needless to say, he soon got baptised in the Holy Spirit, and went home praising God in tongues!
The tongues were used by the Lord as a sign to unbelievers.
