'Often when I ask people if they are a Christian, they say, 'Yes'. And if asked when they became a Christian, reply, 'Since I was Christened as a baby.' What do you say to people who tell you they have always been a Christian?'

Answer: Doesn't it make your heart plummet? It's typical of nominal 'Christians' in the West, and all too common in African and Asian nations. Often they are clean living churchgoers, who read their Bible and pray daily, but are still dead in their sins. They have never been born again, they know about Jesus but they don't know Jesus, nor do they have His Life.

The first time I came across people like this, I tried to gloss over it, and go along with their self-deception so as not to cause offence. But the Lord gave me no peace about doing so, and showed me it was love's duty to wake them up, and declare the truth. Now, I always confront them in love, and have had both wonderful results, plenty of insults, but great peace.

First, understand that anybody who tells you they have always been Christian is definitely not a Christian. You know it by the word of their testimony, which directly contradicts God's Word, and by the witness of God's Spirit in your heart yearning for you to point them to Christ. Many of you know what I'm talking about.

Second, don't let them think you accept them as a Christian. Either, tell them straight out that they are not Christian, or show an expression of amazement, or if you favour diplomacy, ask them what the Bible says about how to become a Christian. This last way, you deflect their antagonism from yourself to God's Word. Just don't let them off the hook.

Where I was raised we call a shovel a shovel, so I tend to come straight out and tell them gently that they are not Christian and need to be born again, and point them to John 3. Some people go purple, and mutter, but I find most respond well to the truth in love.

A more tactful approach to this situation is to avoid asking if someone is a Christian, when you suspect they're going to give you the heart sinking reply. You usually get some forewarning from the Holy Spirit. Instead, ask them when they were born again. The commonest response is a blank look and a shake of the head, you can then point them straight to John 3, and follow the Lord.

Others will say they were born again at their 'christening'. Christening is one of Satan's ways of inoculating sinners against the Gospel. Show them that it is completely unbiblical, that to become a Christian each individual must hear, understand, and respond to the Good News of Christ by choosing to repent and receive Christ as Lord and Saviour. Ask them if they did this when they were infants, and to cover their silent embarrassment relate your personal testimony of what it is like to be genuinely born again.

Silent Evangelists

You can listen to a real evangelist, anointed by God, all day every day. It's pure joy, and thrills our hearts. But they are very rare. The one good thing about radio and TV preachers is that you can shut them up when you've had enough. And for most, that's about three seconds Click! and they're gone: relief. There's only a handful I would give earspace to. If the rest are such an embarrassment to the saints, imagine how sinners feel listening to 'em.

Have you, in your personal evangelism, witnessed the tell-tale signs when you are in full spate? I certainly have. Listener's pupils dilate, you loose their attention, and finally their eyes glaze over, just when you are about to quote Romans 10:9-10.

You get full marks for enthusiasm, but a big fat zero for effectiveness. Heaven's thrilled that you're on the right side, and trying to win souls, but wants you to learn to listen to the Lord, as well as speak in His Name.

In fact, sometimes He may want you to be silent, and just do something instead.

When I was still in my sins, and ridiculing Christians, the Lord sent a chap to me in New Zealand. He was a total stranger, but I knew he was a Christian, (sinners can smell you coming) and began to recoil as he approached. To my amazement, he didn't give me the expected whole-nine-yards, but simply smiled, said, 'This is for you to read', handed me a Gospel tract, and walked away.

At the time, I commented that I was very impressed that he wasn't pushy, so I read his tract, and a few weeks and several divine appointments later, I was saved and glorifying Christ. God had used a silent evangelist.
