'Years ago, I looked up the word 'Easter', and was troubled to find that it was the name of a Pagan goddess. I made the decision not to celebrate that holiday, as it seemed blasphemous. My children and I call it 'Resurrection Day'. But no 'Easter' bunny, or the booty that goes with all of that. I take heat from my relatives and friends, but feel totally convicted in my heart of hearts that it is a pagan tradition, and will relentlessly continue to deny that 'Easter' has anything to do with the death and resurrection of my Lord and Saviour. Your comments?'
Answer: Great question.
Once you're saved and filled with the Holy Spirit: always follow heart conviction no matter what anybody says. It's the Lord leading you, and it is to Him that you give account. Remember; for saints (the righteous) heart conviction is more reliable than conscience. For sinners, both are corrupted by the sinful nature, ungodly: and deadly.
Religious people have all sorts of 'special days'; Paul sternly rebuked the Galatian believers for observing them when they thought it would 'improve' their salvation. Gal 4:10
Christians know, that in this dispensation, every day is a Sabbath, every day is Resurrection Day (Love it!), and every day is the day of salvation. But not everyone is clued-in, so we have instructions in 1 Co. Ch.8 to take care that our freedom in Christ does not cause immature believers to stumble, by going against their weak conscience. The principle is made clear in verse two:
"The person who knows something, doesn't know everything, but the one who loves God is known by God." (Paraphrased)
This is a precious word, and I thank Jesus for the mature believers who followed it when I was a spectacularly unlovely infant in Christ. So keep sincere love uppermost as you make your 'stand' for God, and you will have upon you The Anointing that breaks every yoke.
But your question is specifically about the name 'Easter' and the shock you received discovering its demonic pagan origin. (There's a note about this in The Easter Message article.)
The English word 'Easter' is derived from the Saxon word Eostre, the name of a Pagan demon, whom Saxons sacrificed to around the time of the Jewish Passover. The 'Easter' celebrations of Christ's death and resurrection were an attempt to deflect attention onto Christ, away from Pagan demons.
Personally, I've never had any qualms about the name 'Easter' because the tactic succeeded, and most people have come to associate it with Christ, not Pagan demons. The fact that you were so shocked illustrates this. But, like you no doubt, I would've preferred them to have named it something completely different such as 'Redemption.' Bear in mind also, that the KJV translators were led to use the word, 'Easter' in preference to 'Passover', without apparent indictment. Acts 12:4
Since being saved, I've always used the season as a platform for all-out evangelism, being careful to avoid the tacky associations with Pagan traditions such as; egg-hunting, bunnies, resurrection-biscuits, (cookies) and the rest. I like to keep the Gospel clean, and straight as it came from God's lips, don't you? We don't need tricks, treats, or gimmicks, to get the message across: Mark 16:20 Holy Ghost confirmation is enough.
Children particularly appreciate straight-talk. Oh how I wish somebody had told me the Gospel message when I was a kid, instead of the ecumenical nonsense Satan pumps out.
In summary: Follow the Lord's leading in your heart in all things; but don't let any 'issue' overshadow your love for sinners or fellow believers, otherwise the Son will be hidden, rather than radiating through you. Make your point about the name, as you already have, but be sure to do it in genuine love, and share the Gospel clearly, leading nominal 'Christians' away from relying on sacraments for salvation, and empty religious traditions: to the Living Christ.
Have a happy Redemption, and a blessed Resurrection!
