What does the Bible mean when it says that Jesus came by water and blood?
'He came by blood', means God took upon human flesh and walked on Earth as a Man. Flesh and blood just like you; tempted as you are, yet without sin. Then He surrendered His life in your stead, poured out His Blood for you, paying for your sin, and bearing all the punishment due to you.
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Mtt. 26:28
If Christ had not risen, it would have shown He was merely human, but He arose proving Himself to be exactly who He claimed to be all along; God in the Flesh.
... The God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant... Heb. 13:20
He came from Heaven by Blood, and He came back from death and Hell through His Blood shed for us. He reigns forever, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood... Rev. 1:5b
Animal blood will never take away sins; only God's Blood can do that. 'He came by blood', is a declaration from God of both Jesus Christ's humanity and His divinity.
This is important. Unless you believe that Jesus Christ is Almighty God in the Flesh you will die in your sins. He said so.
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins. Jn. 8:24
(Note the [he] was added by the KJV translators and weakens the impact of what Christ was saying. He was certainly claiming to be the Christ, but He was saying more than that. He was telling those religious Jews they were looking at I AM; YHWH in the Flesh. See the whole chapter.)
'He came by water', is as significant as the expression 'he came by blood'. What is God speaking of? If we are unsure we are in an awful place of ignorance regarding the witness of God on Earth. How can a Christian boldly proclaim Christ if he, or she, is unsure of this basic foundation God is giving us?
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. v. 7-8
The fact that Christ came by water is one of the three God-given witnesses, with the Holy Spirit, and Christ's Blood agreeing.
He came by water refers not to water baptism, but to His human birth. Not to the muddy waters of the Jordan River, but the water in which the baby Jesus formed and grew in His mother's womb. The amniotic water He floated in until He burst forth into the world. Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee Ps. 2:7
What was so special about the water Christ came through? The virgin birth; miraculous, unique and divine. When God came to Earth as a Human, He came by a miracle, the Only Begotten of the Father, and He came by water.
You came into this world by water, but your father was human, corrupted by Adam's sin nature. Christ came into this world by water; His Father is God, sinless, holy, and forever perfect. The water of the virgin birth witnesses who Christ's Father is; Almighty God.
If Christ was not born of a virgin, and Joseph had sired Jesus as the gossips muttered, Christ would have remained dead in the tomb. But His resurrection proved His divinity; proved His sinlessness, confirmed He is the Christ, and also validated the Word of God, and His parents, concerning His virgin birth.
Discover what born of water means
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. v. 7-8
I say again: The fact that Christ came by water is one of the three God-given witnesses, with the Holy Spirit and Christ's Blood agreeing.
Each witness testifying to the Gospel fact that Christ is Almighty God in the Flesh. The Spirit of God says so, the Blood of Christ says so, and the water of His virgin birth declares it so.
God's witness about His Son is given to every repentant sinner who comes to Christ believing. It comes as something even more precious than a booming Voice from Heaven, or a visit from the Angel Gabriel.
This is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself... 1 Jn. 5:9b-10a
In himself... Oh Glory! The inner witness of God's Spirit in the born again child of God. Declaring:
'that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.' v.11
No amount of religion will give it to you; you MUST be born again. When you are really born of God, He puts His witness inside your heart telling you that you have eternal life, that you have Christ in you, your hope of glory.
No man can give you this, no prophet, pastor, vicar, or priest. It comes from Almighty God alone to all who truly repent and believe in Christ. And when you have this Gift; no man can take it from you. It's the Gift of Almighty God to you who believe on Christ.
Some of you have called yourselves 'Christian' for decades, attended services, jumped through the hoops, even been Ministers, but you know that you do not have the witness of God in your heart. You are not certain of a place in Heaven; your sins condemn you. You've been toiling for peace, trying to please God, but are snared by your sins. You do not have the peace of God because you have never been born again. When you are tempted, you fall into sin because you've never overcome the world God's Way. You have religion: but not salvation.
I have Good News for you today. Stop pedalling Satan's treadmill. Receive God's Peace, Righteousness, and Life. You can't work for it, pay for it, nor ever deserve it.
God gives it freely: or not at all.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph. 2:8-9
